The deadline for Congress to renew federal unemployment insurance programs passed this week without reauthorization, and cutoffs have begun for up to 2 million of out-of-work Americans, including 200,000 New Yorkers. Democrats want the renewal, but Republicans have insisted it’s too expensive. The GOP is trying to trade it for an extension of the Bush tax cuts. http://mycrains.crainsnewyork.com/polls/2010/12/whos-right-in-the-unemployment.php
Whose side are you on?
The Democrats’. Unemployment is expected to remain above 9% in 2011, and unemployment insurance has a critical role to play in the recovery, with every dollar spent generating two dollars in economic activity. The White House says the cutoff will mean 600,000 fewer jobs by the end of ’11.
The Republicans’. With a national debt spiraling out of control, the nation cannot afford the added expense. The extra $56.4 billion (!!!) must be paid for with other cuts. Besides, getting unemployment benefits for 99 weeks made too many workers dependent on Uncle Sam.
