Net neutrality: claims to have the votes ~ Tuesday’s vote may not be the end

Net Neutrality Plan Has the Votes at FCC

internet-police.jpgMichael Copps, the swing vote at the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for a set of network neutrality rules, said Monday he will vote for the proposal.
The FCC is scheduled to vote Tuesday for net neutrality rules proposed by Chairman Julius Genachowski. The commission’s two Republicans have said they plan to vote against the proposal, meaning Genachowski would need support from both his fellow Democrats, Copps and Mignon Clyburn, to approve the rules.
Copps has raised questions about Genachowski’s proposal, which several net neutrality advocates have criticized as too weak. Earlier this month, Copps suggested that the best way to pass net neutrality rules would be for the FCC to reclassify broadband as a regulated, common-carrier service. http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20101220/tc_pcworld/netneutralityplanhasthevotesatfcc_1

IDG News Service – A vote this week by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Net neutrality rules for broadband providers will be an important step in a seven-plus-year debate over network discrimination and management, but it won’t be the end of the issues.

The FCC is scheduled to vote on Net neutrality, or open Internet, rules during its Tuesday meeting, but if the proposal by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski passes, Republicans in Congress have promised they will try to repeal the decision. With a divided Congress, attempts to repeal Net neutrality rules may not succeed, but there’s also a chance of a lawsuit on an FCC decision this big. http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9201799/Net_neutrality_Tuesday_s_vote_may_not_be_the_end?taxonomyId=16
