Deal reached on aid package for 9/11 responders

The Senate on Wednesday agreed to provide up to $4.2 billion in new aid to survivors of the September 2001 terrorism attack on the World Trade Center and responders who became ill working in its ruins. The House and Senate were expected to vote later in the day on a deal negotiated by Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York with Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma.
The votes were expected to be the last major action taken by the 111th Congress before it adjourns. A new Congress with Republicans in control of the House and with a smaller Democratic majority in the Senate takes office Jan. 5.
