New York report cards flunk many Rochester-area school districts

School performance reports
Each year New York schools must meet certain goals on standardized tests under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. All schools must meet the goals in reading and math. Elementary schools also face science standards, and high schools are evaluated by their graduation rate. Schools must meet the standards both overall and in eight different racial and socioeconomic student groups. “YSH” means a school did not meet the goal, but students made enough progress to earn credit. “S” means schools did not have enough students in a particular group to count it.

New York report cards flunk many Rochester-area school districts

More area school districts failed to meet the standards of the federal No Child Left Behind law last year, as local educators struggled to help students with disabilities meet standardized testing targets.
All but four districts in Monroe County failed to meet at least one requirement of the law.

And seven suburban districts that had received perfect report cards for two years failed to make the grade in one or more categories this year. Those districts will have one year to improve before they face penalties.

OXYMORON: Rochester teachers union reinforces no-confidence vote
Brizzard is doing things right if the union is pissed off…. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20110218/NEWS01/102180331

For the second time in less than a month, hundreds of teachers, parents and community members gathered to protest City School District policies being ushered in by Superintendent Jean-Claude Brizard.

Consensus of Opinion: Commissioner Elliott thank you for reminding Mr. Urbanski (head of the teachers union) about his 30 year war against our children and against the taxpayers of Rochester. His constant attempts to shift and failure to accept responsibility for the deterioration of the City of Rochester is an insult to every citizen here. The Superintendent has been here only 3 1/2 years, he is not responsible for the 95% of our children who are not ready for life after being uneducated in the systems that you and your cohorts have designed for the last 30 years. The parents, taxpayers and new leaders of the City of Rochester all have confidence that it is time for you Mr. Urbanski, to go.
