Season’s snow tops 100 inches in Rochester

Rochester is above average. [But only for snowfall]

With about a month of winter left on the calendar, we’ve surpassed the normal snowfall amount to date and our seasonal snowfall average.
Rochester has had 102 inches of snow for the season, according to meteorologist Judy Levan of the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

The normal to this date is 72 inches. The seasonal average is 100.3 inches,” Levan said.
“There’s really been no large snow storms. The accumulation has been mostly amounts of less than 8 or 9 inches.”

The Rochester area broke the record this winter for the snowiest December.
That month brought 46.5 inches of snow, topping the previous record of 46.2 inches in 2008, according to the National Weather Service. January was less snowy, with about 30 inches, but it was much colder, with 19 days of 20-degree or lower temperatures, including 13 consecutive.
“It’s been a long season of cold and accumulating snow every day — not so much because there’s been large snows,” Levan said.

True to this season’s form, the 3 inches that had fallen at the Greater Rochester International Airport by 7 a.m. Monday pushed Rochester beyond its seasonal average.
As for the rest of the week, a calm weather pattern will hold through mid-week with the coldest weather coming this morning, Levan said.

Today and Wednesday are expected to be snow-free and sunny. Thursday is also expected to remain dry, but cloudy. Snow showers could return Friday.
Warmer weather is expected as the week progresses with highs around 20 today. The high should reach 30 Wednesday and 40 on Thursday.
