Liberal newpaper pushes RINO Progressive:
Assemblywoman Jane Corwin, the leading contender in a special election for Congress, is being attacked for her position on abortion by a would-be opponent, but her support from a crucial third party does not appear to be in jeopardy.
Corwin, R-Clarence, Erie County, supports the availability of abortion during the first trimester. David Bellavia, an Iraq War veteran who is retired from the U.S. Army and seeks Conservative Party support, said he is the true anti-abortion candidate in the race.
Corwin has been nominated by Republican committee chairmen in the 26th Congressional District, who cited her private-sector background, favorable ratings from the Conservative Party in the state Assembly, and her ability to bring her own wealth to a campaign.
Democrats have not nominated a candidate to replace Rep. Chris Lee, who resigned Feb. 9. The district’s active enrolled voters are 40 percent Republican and 33 percent Democrat.
Bellavia, a Batavia resident who also sought the Republican nomination, said Corwin should not get the Conservative Party endorsement because of her position on abortion.
Corwin is not opposed to abortions during the first trimester, though she said during a visit to Greece last week that she would have voted to defund Planned Parenthood if she were in Congress. She is also opposed to partial-birth abortions and supports parental notification.
“I don’t believe the Conservative Party will abandon their founding principles for the expediency of a Corwin candidacy,” said Bellavia.
The Conservative Party appears to disagree.
The Monroe County Conservative Party unanimously endorsed Corwin last week. The state Conservative Party will select the candidate who will carry its line during a special election.
State Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long will meet with Bellavia today, but said that the Monroe County committee’s support of Corwin gives her a “leg up.”
Long also said Corwin’s stance doesn’t make her “pro-abortion.”
“I’m pro-life, the party’s pro-life, but this race is not a single-issue race.”
Long on Monday revised an earlier position that the party would not endorse a candidate until Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls a special election, and said that an endorsement could come before then.
Lee, R-Amherst, Erie County, resigned after an embarrassing e-mail exchange with a woman he met on Craigslist was published online.
