Ethnic cleansing in Ivory Coast as 100’s of bodies are discovered by the U.N.

UN investigators have found more than 100 bodies in the past 24 hours in western Ivory Coast in what appeared to have been ethnically driven killings, the UN human rights office said Friday. ”The human rights team investigating… in west Cote d’Ivoire found more than 100 bodies in the past 24 hours in three locations,” said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. ”All the incidents appear to have been at least partly ethnically motivated,” he added. About 40 bodies were found in Blolequin, west of Duekoue. ”The team also went to a nearby town of Guiglo, where they saw more than 60 bodies,” he said
Another 15 bodies were also found in Duekoue, in addition to 229 corpses previously found in the town. ”There’s very much an existing ethnic element to it,” said Colville, noting that some victims were burnt alive and others thrown down a well. At least 1,000 Christians were slaughtered this week in at the Salesian Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus mission in Duekoue, Ivory Coast by Muslim troops loyal to Alassane Ouattara. They were killed despite 200 United Nations troops operating what it said were “robust” patrols from its base on the outskirts to protect civilians in and around the church. Caritas workers visited the town and reported seeing a neighbourhood filled with bodies of people who had been shot and hacked to death with machetes.

The conflict in Ivory Coast began in 2002. The country is divided between the Muslim north and Christian south.
This is a conflict that has been brewing for years.
Reports from the Ivory Coast published by the London Evening Standard indicated that more than 200 bodies, some of them burned alive, have been found in the country.
The silence of the Obama administration on the violence in the Ivory Coast makes hypocritical the president’s declaration in his May 28 speech on Libya, that U.S. military action there was necessary to prevent
a massacre by Gadhafi that ‘would have reverberated across the region and stained the conscience of the world’.
