Like Clinton, Obama tried to argue more generally that

Republicans are targeting popular programs, though the

way he put it was rather highfalutin: “This vision is less

about reducing the deficit than it is about changing the

basic social compact in America.” And he has a point.

It probably wasn’t a good idea for Rep. Ryan to say, on

the Thursday before the 2010 election: “We are five days

away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.”

Oh wait, Ryan didn’t say that. Sen. Obama did, in 2008.

That makes us highly skeptical of his ability to present himself

as a defender of the status quo or “the social compact.” He and

the Democrats who controlled Congress in 2009-10 egregiously

violated that compact when they defied the voters to enact ObamaCare.
