More than two dozen protesters rallied outside the Monroe County Office Building on West Main Street on Thursday to demand a stop to the local implementation of a federal policy that critics say threatens civil rights.
Secure Communities, also known as S-Comm, is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security program designed as a public safety measure to identify and deport dangerous criminals.
Municipalities across the nation are signing on. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. John Helfer said the county’s involvement is a data-sharing agreement, and patrol procedures have not changed.
“Secure Communities is a federal immigration enforcement program designed to put states and local police agencies at the center of federal immigration enforcement,” said Sister M. Gratia L’Esperance of the Sisters of Mercy and Interfaith Alliance of Rochester. “Congress gave a narrowly focused mandate to target serious convicted criminals — the worst of the worst.
