When it comes to illegal immigration, voters see the job as more to blame than the job applicant.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 65% of Likely U.S. Voters feel that employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants are a bigger problem than the illegals who are seeking a job. Just 17% say the illegal immigrants seeking a job are the bigger problem. Eighteen percent (18%) are not sure.
These views are little changed across virtually all demographic categories.
The Political Class is less critical of employers who hire illegal immigrants, with just 51% who see them as a bigger program than the job-seeking illegals themselves. By comparison, 67% of Mainstream voters view the employers as the bigger problem.
The U.S. Supreme Court late last week upheld the legality of an Arizona law cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants, and 61% of voters favor a law in their state that would shut down companies that knowingly and repeatedly hire illegal immigrants.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce joined with the Obama administration in the unsuccessful Supreme Court challenge of Arizona’s law. Two-out-of-three voters (68%) believe that government and big business work together against the interests of consumers and investors.
