NY Governor suspends Program that they never followed anyway, appeasers to the illegal population of NYS.

NY has hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens by their own admission and do NOTHING to stem the flow.

“Governor Cuomo is right to suspend implementation of the deeply flawed Secure Communities program which does nothing to make anyone any safer,” said Hector Figueroa, Secretary Treasurer of Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union.

NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman agreed: “Gov. Cuomo has sent a clear message that New York State respects the values of freedom, justice and human dignity.”

N.Y. Dem. Governor Suspends Controversial Immigration Program

By Sumathi Reddy

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has suspended New York’s participation in a controversial federal immigration program aimed at deporting illegal immigrants who have been convicted of crimes.
The Secure Communities program, operated by local authorities in partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, has drawn opposition from immigration advocates and some city lawmakers, who say that thousands of people with clean records have been sent back to their country of origin.

Under the program, the fingerprints of people booked into local jails were transmitted to a database reviewed by immigration officials. ICE has stated that the goal is to have the program in every community by 2013.
The program was rolled out in 35 New York communities, including Suffolk County, beginning last year. With the governor’s announcement, even communities that chose to share their fingerprint data will be barred from doing so. Secure Communities has not been put into effect in New York City.

In an emailed statement, Cuomo pointed to “mounting evidence” that the program wasn’t meeting its goals.

[NO IT WASN’T, ILLEGALS WERE NOT DEPORTED BUT ALLOWED TO GO FREE TO COMMIT EVEN MORE HEINOUS CRIMES!]

“There are concerns about the implementation of the program as well as its impact on families, immigrant communities and law enforcement in New York,” he said. “As a result, New York is suspending its participation in the program.”

Started under former President George W. Bush in 2008, opposition to the program has been growing nationwide. Illinois quit the program last month, more than a year after suspending its participation. Meanwhile, other states — among them Washington and Minnesota — have declined to join the program.
