The World Council of Churches (WCC) has announced that it has reached a broad consensus on appropriate missionary conduct, but not all Christians agree with it.

Brian Tyndall of Global Outreach International is troubled by one section that instructs people to accept what other religions consider to be true and holy.

“The reality is that what we’re called to accept as Christians as truth is the Word of God,” he points out. “Jesus said in John 17: 17, ‘Thy word is truth’ — and so the truth that Christians have been given is the inspired, infallible, inerrant Word of God.”

Since that is the only thing believers have been called to accept as truth, Tyndall opposes the call to accept what other religions teach is true and holy.

The Global Outreach chief operating officer also challenges the position that Christian organizations should consult with other religions to establish a code of conduct, as he contends liberal organizations like the WCC have become politically correct “in their thinking…in things that they are saying, and in the ways that they are acting.”

He says: “The Christian church is not called to think or act politically correct; we’re called on to think and to act in conformity with Christ and with his Word.”

As an officer of a Christian organization, Tyndall adds that he would never consider consulting with another religion to set standards for a code of conduct for missions. The code must instead be faithful to the Word of God. He stresses, though, that all people should be treated with dignity and respect.
