DETROIT — The Detroit Police Bomb Squad was called Tuesday to investigate a suitcase that was found on a man who was paddling across the Detroit River on an inflatable raft.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Justin Westmiller said boaters spotted the man traveling from the Canadian side of the river over to Detroit near the Ambassador Bridge.

They immediately called the U.S. Coast Guard.

“It’s absolutely important. We can’t do our job by ourselves. We’ve got, we’ve got lots of important partners in our local and federal agencies, but one of our most important partners is everybody else, all of our civilian partners,” said Westmiller.

The man was taken into custody by Border Patrol agents. It was not immediately known where the man was from.
