(CNSNews.com) – The White House has started a new initiative to engage American youth to start, circulate and sign petitions about various public policy issues. The petitions, intended to gain signatures through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, will get a White House review if it meets the threshold of 5,000 signatures.
The initiative, called We the People, is open to anyone 13 or older, and comes before an election year when the youth vote is not expected to be nearly close to the record high and lopsided levels it reached to help carry President Barack Obama to victory in 2008.
David Plouffe, senior adviser to the president, announced the online project Thursday, saying it will “change the way Americans engage with President Obama and his administration.”
In an email announcing the “We the People” petition project, readers are urged to “sign up to be the first to know” when it goes live.. (“Help us spread the word about this new tool by forwarding this email to ten friends,” the email says.)
“President Obama believes that government should be open and accountable to its citizens, and that’s the goal of We the People,” Plouffe said.
“Soon, anyone will be able to create or sign a petition at WhiteHouse.gov seeking action from the federal government on a range of issues. If a petition gathers enough signatures, the White House staff will review it, make sure it gets to Obama Administration policy experts, and issue an official response. President Obama will even answer a few himself,” Plouffe added. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=g6Q5RdAiXjo
