On Thursday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) issued an order mandating state agencies translate their various forms and provide interpreters in six different languages for immigrants seeking publicly funded services. The effort will cost taxpayers $1.5 million.
No one will be questioned as to their legal status while applying for public services.
Under Cuomo’s directive agencies including social services and the department of motor vehicles will translate their forms and websites into Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Russian, French and French Creole.
Cuomo told reporters: “It’s government’s responsibility to figure out how to communicate with the person…We invite people here … so to the extent we can expedite and facilitate communication among our family members, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
New York Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long criticized the plan, saying: “This is the problem with government today. We try to do everything for everybody.
