“A Ravenwood High School freshman said her Muslim beliefs were put to the test when commanding officers in her Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program told her she
couldn’t both wear a headscarf and march in the September homecoming parade.”

She was told she could not wear her headscarf with the JROTC uniform. Then she and her mother called CAIR and a complaint alleging religious discrimination was filed with the Williamson County school district.

CAIR has demanded an apology to the girl and a modification of the JRTOC policy. Any modification to the policy would have to be made by the U.S. Army.

Williamson County has responded that the military makes the rules which they must follow and which they intend to follow. The Army spokesman, Wayne Hall, says exceptions to the rules can be made.”

TALKING POINTS-REGARDING STUDENT DEMIN ZAWITY:

This action is not religious discrimination. We affirm his decision to adhere to the rules. The student has dropped out of JROTC and has stated she has no desire to return, so the issue is moot and no further action is required by the school district in this regard.
