THREE REPORTS OUT TODAY ARE EXPECTED TO UNDERSCORE the two sides of the debate over DOD spending.
THE PROJECT ON DEFENSE ALTERNATIVES plans to release two reports at a 1 p.m. conference call with reporters explaining how adjustments in U.S. military strategy and global posture could result in large budget savings that could contribute to deficit reduction. The group has argued for more aggressive cuts to DOD budgets than administration officials have sought.
ONE OF THE HOT-BUTTON ISSUES IN THE DOD SPENDING DEBATE is what to do about military retirement. Panetta has said the issue is on the table, but pledged not to make any changes that will affect current service members. The HASC Personnel Subcommittee meets at 1 p.m. in 2212 Rayburn to hear about the issue from Pentagon officials and representatives of the Military Officers Association of America and the Fleet Reserve Association.
