Beijing’s military buildup makes a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan issue less likely, according to the final draft of a report to Congress obtained by Bloomberg Government. The report by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission scheduled for release next month says China’s buildup has tilted the cross-strait balance of power in Beijing’s favor, and takes a more pessimistic tone on the issue than a recent Pentagon report on the subject. “A gross military imbalance could … lead Beijing to act preemptively to resolve the cross-Strait problem, possibly resulting in U.S. involvement,” the report says.
