Our troops in Afghanistan woke up to a tough and desperate fight tomorrow, as the Taliban boldly attacked their outpost in Paktika province’s Barmal district.
| …[a NATO spokesman] described the attack, which began soon after darkness fell, as complex, with an unusually large force of about 100 insurgent fighters striking simultaneously from different directions, using an array of weaponry.Clashes generally taper off as the early Afghan winter takes hold, as it has begun to do, but the attack suggested that the Taliban and other groups intend to try to keep up the fight into the cold-weather months. The estimate of between 60 and 70 insurgents killed came from the Paktika provincial spokesman. The NATO force did not give a figure of its own, but [ the NATO spokesman] said the Afghan count appeared to be fairly accurate. – L.A. It’s rare for Taliban to make a direct attack on American forces, they typically target Afghan police or government offices. And not only did our troops repel the attackers, but they inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. They will think twice about going toe-to-toe with the best trained troops in the world!
The base that came under assault was a small, remote camp in the far reaches of Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border. These are some of the toughest places to serve, because reinforcements take longer to reach you and the supply chain to such small bases is limited.
That’s why the troops at these remote locations really appreciate care packages from home!
