REP. DUNCAN HUNTER ISN’T HAPPY with DOD’s response to his push for more Medals of Honor to be awarded for valor in Afghanistan and Iraq. “The response was expected. It shows that the Department simply refuses to acknowledge that the process for awarding the Medal of Honor is not working as it should,” the California Republican tells us in an e-mail. “It’s really unfortunate, because there are examples of individual acts that rise to the level of the Medal of Honor, but they have been overlooked by the process.”
THE LETTER FROM ACTING USD FOR PERSONNEL AND READINESS ROONEY said DOD and the four services “are confident that Medal of Honor nominations submitted are fairly evaluated against long-standing Medal of Honor award criteria.” Read it here: http://politi.co/vaeTou
HUNTER – A MARINE VETERAN OF IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN – has championed the cause of several service members whose actions “are consistent with Medals of Honor awarded in past conflicts,” particularly that of Marine Sgt. Rafael Peralta, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross after a review that still generates controversy. We wrote about his concerns last month, you can see the story here: http://politi.co/oVinCm
