NEW VISA PROPOSAL COULD OPEN DOOR FOR RAMPANT ABUSE

Rep. Marco Rubio (R-FL) held a press conference last week in Miami to promote the Trafficking Victims Protection Act which, if passed, will grant temporary residency status to victims of sex trafficking. When asked if the measure could result in untold numbers of illegal immigrants simply lying to stay in the country, Rep. Rubio responded, “It’s been a factor” and that there is the concern in Washington that illegal immigrants will exploit this and use it as a loophole to game the system. The bill itself seems unnecessary as there is already a visa program (known as the T Nonimmigrant Status or “T visa”) in place that addresses this concern.

SESSIONS: FOREIGN LAWSUITS AGAINST STATES’ IMMIGRATION POLICIES ‘BAFFLING’

Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama called foreign lawsuits against the illegal immigration policy of his state and others “baffling.” As you know, sixteen foreign countries joined the U.S. Department of Justice in suing Alabama, South Carolina, and Arizona, after the patriot-states passed a series of tough immigration legislation cracking down on illegal immigrants in their states. Like us, Sen. Sessions finds it “baffling” that a foreign country thinks they should have any say in the matter especially when the states’ laws are consistent with and complementary to federal law. The countries involved in the Alabama case in particular are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
