President Obama and the defense budget: a factoid that falls short

Let’s comapare apples to apples and drop the ‘funny math’…

TRUE, BUT FALSE –
The Washington Post’s Fact Checker on Thursday targeted Obama’s use of a factoid that has become a common argument in the debate over defense spending: The United States spends more on defense than the next 10 or 12 or 14 countries combined. Fact Checker Glenn Kessler awarded the statement one Pinocchio because of its dubious relevance. His analysis is here: http://wapo.st/zTD0ti

WE’LL GO FURTHER and say it’s completely irrelevant as a measure of how much the United States should be spending on defense. Everyone says this debate is supposed to be about strategy and not numbers, right? It isn’t how much you spend that counts, it’s what you get for the money and whether that meets your defined needs. Case in point: One of the pillars of DOD’s new AirSea Battle doctrine is the idea that the military will need to be able to defeat relatively cheap measures by adversaries so the more advanced – but more expensive – U.S. forces can maintain access to areas of the world deemed critical to national interests. Also, the defense plans of many potential U.S. adversaries depend on spending in human lives what they won’t spend in cash. Google “Basij” for an example of that.
