IA BILL SETS UP ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT HIRING REPORTING

Iowa lawmakers passed a bill that allows anyone to file a complaint with the attorney general’s office alleging a business is employing an illegal immigrant on Monday. The bill then requires the attorney general, county attorneys and local police to investigate the complaints and verified complaints will be reported to federal immigration officials, and employers could lose their business licenses. Participation in E-Verify, the free federal electronic worker verification system, will also become mandatory should this bill become law.

State Rep. Julian Garrett authored the bill saying the goal is to create a deterrent for illegal workers. State Rep. Gary Worthan who is co-sponsoring the bill says it will crackdown on business taking unfair advantage of their competition by employing illegal immigrants. Opponents of the legislation say it will place a substantial burden on the attorney general’s office, the police and the budget and could also lead to racial profiling.

OBAMA CAMPAIGN RETURNING FUNDS TIED TO MEXICAN FUGITIVE

Obama’s re-election campaign is returning more than $200,000 in donations from the family of a fugitive casino magnate linked to violence and corruption in Mexico and who is also seeking a presidential pardon. Brothers Carlos and Alberto Rojas Cardona, who live and work in Chicago, began donating to the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee last fall according to a New York Times report.

Coincidentally, it was also around the same time that Carlos Cardona arranged for the former chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party to seek a pardon from the governor for his other brother, Pepe Cardona, who jumped bail in Iowa in 1994 fleeing drug and fraud charges in the U.S. and is suspected of orchestrating the assassination of a business rival and making illegal campaign donations to Mexican officials.
