ALBANY — Most state decision makers agree that the state’s prescription database, which tracks what drugs are prescribed to whom, needs improvement.
Most agree that there is a growing abuse of prescription drugs, especially painkillers.
Yet a proposal to insert real-time database reporting in the equation is revealing rifts in that unanimity.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office and lawmakers in both the Senate and Assembly are confident improvements will be made to the database.
How they do it, however, remains a matter for debate.
The proposal from Attorney General Eric Schneiderman would create a real-time database for reporting prescriptions when they’re issued and filled. It has support from dozens of lawmakers in both houses of the Legislature, as well as from New York’s congressional delegation.
It is facing serious opposition, however, from pharmacy groups, doctors and others. Concerns include that it would be onerous on already overworked care providers and impede patient access.
The Cuomo administration is considering how it could act without legislation to make changes to the database and enforce current laws, possibly through an executive order.
