Lollypop Farm takes in 32 cats seized in Wyoming County

The Humane Society of Greater Rochester opened its Lollypop Farm facility to 32 of the more than 400 cats exposed to filthy conditions in Wyoming County this week.
The cats arrived at the Perinton shelter Thursday evening.
State Police said they executed search warrants Wednesday and Thursday after they received a complaint last month that there were hundreds of cats at the Wyoming County SPCA facility not being properly cared for, that the cats had not been checked by a veterinarian, that medications were illegally obtained and grant money received by the facility was not being used for its intended purpose.
Officials say they checked out cats at the shelter in Attica and an adoption center in Clarence, Erie County.
Six had to be euthanized for medical reasons. Most of the rest will need veterinary care, said Erie County SPCA spokesperson Gina Browning.
Browning said conditions at the Attica facility were “horrific.” She said some cats were in cages, some were in cabinets and some were in the wall, but that most were roaming free.
Workers set up a tent outside the shelter building Wednesday and used it as a cleanup center to disinfect cages and kennels. It was impractical to relocate the cats because there were so many and because their health status was uncertain.
Three dogs also were removed from the shelter and taken to an animal control facility.
Wyoming County District Attorney Donald O’Geen said a forensic audit of the facility will be conducted to determine how the grant money was used. Troopers also seized medications from the Attica facility and will investigate how they were obtained and used.
Fewer cats and better conditions were found at the Wyoming County SPCA Adoption Center at the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence, Erie County, and the search there concluded Wednesday, officials said Thursday.
The facilities are closed while officials continue their investigation.
The Humane Society of Greater Rochester on Thursday also sent a team of five employees and volunteers to help perform veterinary checks and clean, feed and process the seized animals.
