Focus on diversity rather than inequality
While Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution (more than 150 years old) is directly responsible for advances in science, noticeably medicine, it hasn’t changed our moral, ethical, religious and political thought process much. But I think it could shed some light on the growing inequality in America.
From a Darwinian point of view, a harsh environment tends to homogenize members of the same species, while a more forgiving environment tends to promote diversity. You see this with domestic animals like dogs and cows where the wild ancestors looked and acted very similar to each other, while those we protect tend to vary over time.
As we build our modern society, we try to make it safe for everyone.
This is reflected in our charity, our civil rights laws and our safety network. We embrace diversity and we should expect our success in these areas to increase equality. Perhaps we should be celebrating our diversity instead of moaning about inequality.
