500 tons of uranium shipped from Iraq, Pentagon says July 07, 2008|From Brianna Keilar and Larry Shaughnessy

The United States secretly shipped out of Iraq more than 500 tons of low-grade uranium dating back to the Saddam Hussein era, the Pentagon said Monday.

The U.S. military spent $70 million ensuring the safe transportation of 550 metric tons of the uranium from Iraq to Canada, said Pentagon spokesman Brian Whitman.

The shipment, which until recently was kept secret, involved a U.S. truck convoy, 37 cargo flights out of Baghdad to a transitional location, and then a transoceanic voyage on board a U.S.-government-owned ship designed to carry troops to a war zone, he said.

UPDATE:

The following is an email exchange I had with Karl Rove. (http://www.rove.com/contact)

It involved a comment he made on the O’Reilly Factor. The emails have been cut and pasted from my AKO (Army Knowledge Online) account. That’s where the exchange took place.

Mr. Rove,
I caught your interview on the O’Reilly Factor tonight and as a retired Soldier, Iraq war veteran, and former Intelligence Analyst, I must take issue with one of your comments.
You stated that there were “no WMDs found in Iraq”. That statement is misleading. As a matter of fact, WMD material certainly WAS found.
The UN admitted that Iraq had over six tons of anthrax, most of it weaponized, right up until the invasion. Some of the weapons were looted before we made it to Baghdad and are probably in Syria.
The inspectors confirmed the existence of WMDs, took pictures, destroyed some, and shipped others outside the country. The Republicans and Democrats knew this. We also discovered labs, construction facilities, and launching devices numerous times since the invasion.
500,000 pounds of yellowcake uranium ore was found in Iraq and transported to the U.S. and Canada to be processed into fuel. At the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2002, satellite images documented that seventy tractor-trailers drove from Baghdad to Syria transporting materials that Saddam Hussein wanted whisked out of Iraq. The trailers were buried intact in huge trenches in the Bakaa Valley in Lebanon.
Yet people ignore the evidence. It’s unbelievable that there is still debate over this.
Here’s just a few open source (UNCLASSIFIED) reports on the subject of what was discovered:
