I watched the video, I also did my own research and found the BBC documentary from 2007 where Kony isn’t in Uganda but the Congo region…don’t get me wrong, my heart breaks for the kids he killed, disfigured and kidnapped, but this hasn’t been happening in Uganda for years. How much has this movie maker collected in his nine year run up to this release? He says he has gotten donations ‘a few dollars at a time’ for years from ‘thousands’. Call me skeptical but I do not trust this current push by this movie maker nor Obama and his sending troops to capture a man who hasn’t been in Uganda for years…something stinks here.
GONE VIRAL — From the front page of today’s New York Times: “Gunmen shot at the truck in front of [Jason Russell], and that is how he discovered the horrors wrought by Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army. Mr. Russell would dedicate the next nine years of his life, often in obscurity, to making them a household name. … Since being posted on Monday, [the] video, ‘KONY 2012,’ has attracted more than 50 million views on YouTube and Vimeo, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations on the first day alone and rocketing across Twitter and Facebook at a pace rarely seen for any video, let alone a half-hour film about a distant conflict in central Africa.” More here. http://nyti.ms/zz9W4p
BACKGROUNDER — Last October, President Obama sent 100 U.S. troops to Africa to play an advisory role in Uganda’s efforts to put an end to the Lord’s Resistance Army. The militant group, which operates in the northern part of the country, has displaced approximately 1.8 million people, has killed tens of thousands, and routinely abducts children to serve as soldiers and slaves, according to the State Department.
