Failure to support Keystone XL Pipeline continues reliance on Middle East

Albany, NY-March 9…As home heating oil and gas prices continued to surge, New York Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer voted to block an amendment that would advance the Keystone XL pipeline, a key job creating project that would reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil.

The proposed 1,700-mile long pipeline expansion, intended to carry crude oil from Canada’s oilsands to the U.S. Gulf Coast, has received bi-partisan support, including from former President Bill Clinton. Fifty-six senators voted in favor of the amendment — four short of the 60 required for approval.

“The Keystone XL Pipeline is a huge job creating construction project that will substitute oil from our reliable ally Canada for oil from the volatile Middle Eastern region and in some cases countries hostile to America’s vital interests,” said Republican State Chairman Ed Cox.
