ALBANY — The Republican senators who voted for same-sex marriage last year are beginning to face political pressure back home for their vote.
Sen. James Alesi, R-Perinton, may get a primary challenger, and he may not win his own party’s nomination.
Sen. Mark Grisanti, R-Buffalo, faces a GOP primary and a Conservative Party challenger. Sen. Roy McDonald, R-Saratoga, is up against a primary from the Republican county clerk, Kathleen Marchione.
Only Sen. Stephen Saland, the veteran Republican senator from Poughkeepsie, has so far faced no intra-party wrangling.
The state Conservative Party has vowed not to back candidates who supported same-sex marriage. The four Republicans helped put the measure into law last June, joining with 29 Democrats to make the bill law. It overwhelmingly passed the Democratic-led Assembly and was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who pushed for the bill’s passage.
Assemblyman Sean Hanna, R-Mendon, told Gannett’s Albany bureau this week that he’s considering a challenge to Alesi.
The state primary is expected to be held Sept. 11.
“With the primary date staying in September, there is still time to address those things,” Hanna said. “So I haven’t made any decisions yet.”
Alesi’s political troubles have more to do with angering constituents last year when he sued a couple in his district after he trespassed on their property and broke his leg, said Monroe County GOP Chairman Bill Reilich. Alesi dropped the suit amid the backlash.
