Multi-Millionaire Brian Williams Lectures Viewers on Income Inequality

After Promoting False Wendy Davis Bio, When Will NBC Offer a Correction? In a fawning puff piece on Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis on NBC’s January 15 Today, correspondent Maria Shriver celebrated the liberal abortion heroine as an “overnight sensation” whose “personal story” has “resonated across this country.” The only problem with the gushing profile that followed was that key facts and details of Davis’s life were either left out or just untrue. In an article for The Dallas Morning News, senior political writer Wayne Slater, hardly a conservative, pointed out several glaring inaccuracies in the account put forward by Davis in Shiver’s report.

Multi-Millionaire Brian Williams Lectures Viewers on Income Inequality

On Monday’s NBC Nightly News, anchor Brian Williams – who reportedly earned $13 million a year in 2012 – quoted Karl Marx while hyping a new report on global income disparity: “…the staggering news out today about the growing gap between the haves and the have nots.” [Listen to the audio]

Williams melodramatically recited the findings: “Some new figures came out today….And they are so shocking, it takes a while for them to sink in. A study commissioned by Oxfam says the world’s richest 85 individuals have the same wealth as 3.5 billion people around the world. Once again, 85 people on this planet have the same amount of wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion people on this planet.”

As NewsBusters’ Tim Graham reported in 2008, this is the same Brian Williams who “lives in one of New York’s swankiest addresses in Manhattan with the chic restaurant Le Cirque on the ground floor, which offers high priced cuisine like an appetizer of terrine of foie gras with Gewurtztraminer gelee for $38. ‘It’s better than having an Applebee’s in the lobby,’ he joked to the New York Observer in 2006.”

After Comparing Christie to Nixon for Nine Days, Chris Matthews Discovers That ‘Facts’ Should Decide Case

On every program since Chris Christie’s bridge scandal broke on January 8, Chris Matthews has smeared the Republican governor as just like Richard Nixon in Watergate. Matthews has done this for nine straight shows, including the January 20 edition of Hardball.
However, on the same program, with no sense of self awareness, a thought occurred to the anchor. He announced that if “it is discovered that Governor Christie did not encourage political revenge, did not signal that this is the way he wanted political business conducted, then he will be exonerated before the eyes of the country. The facts will decide it. And that`s the way it should be.”

Networks Tout Obama’s Planned Summit With ‘Very Similar’ Pope; Ignore Dispute Over Religious Liberty

On Tuesday, ABC, CBS, and NBC’s morning newscasts all hyped the White House’s announcement that President Obama’s would meet with Pope Francis in March, and emphasized their apparent agreement on economic issues. On CBS This Morning, Bill Plante touted the “chance for him [Obama] to align himself with the agenda of the very popular new pope, at a time when the President’s own popularity here at home is at a low point.”

ABC’s Robin Roberts even asserted on Good Morning America that the two world leaders are “very similar.” However, none of these morning shows reported that just a week earlier, the Pope’s secretary of state “expressed [his] concernfor the healthcare reforms in relation to the guarantee of religious freedom and conscientious objectionduring a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. [MP3 audio available here; video clips below]

GMA was the first of the Big Three newscasts to report the breaking news. Anchor George Stephanopoulos underlined that “the President has talked so much about inequality – one of the big themes of the Pope’s as well.” Just before making her “very similar” claim about Obama and Pope Francis, Roberts pointed out her own recent meeting with the pontiff, and joked that “when I was there with the Pope, he gave me a heads up.”
