Binghamton, N.Y. (AP) — A gun buyback has resulted in the collection of 30 unused or unwanted shotguns, rifles and handguns.

The Binghampton Press & Sun-Bulletin reports (http://press.sn/1nUF6wb ) that Saturday’s three-hour event at a local Veterans of Foreign Wars post was part of a statewide initiative sponsored by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

Those relinquishing firearms received debit cards with $25 for antique or non-working firearms, $50 for rifles or shotguns and $75 for handguns.

Assistant Attorney General James Shoemaker says many of the guns were unlicensed. Those dropping off weapons weren’t required to provide identification.

The newspaper says similar buybacks in Utica and Rochester have yielded more than 200 firearms each.
