Albany, N.Y. (AP) — New York’s governor may have won a comfortable margin in the Democratic primary, but his challenger’s stronger-than-expected performance shows he faces difficulties with environmentalists, state workers and voters critical of his handling of corruption.
Cuomo defeated Fordham University law professor Zephyr Teachout 62 percent to 34 percent in Tuesday’s matchup. Few observers had predicted she would crack 30 percent.

Cuomo supporters say Teachout’s surprising primary showing doesn’t reflect the wide support Cuomo’s centrist policies enjoy among most voters.
The governor faces Republican Rob Astorino and Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins in November.
