The past several weeks, Republicans in Washington have worked behind closed doors using a seldom-used law called the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to gut important protections that impact you and your family.
House Republicans have already used the CRA to make it easier for coal companies to dump toxic waste in our waterways, allow big oil and gas companies to pollute our air with methane leaks, and help oil, gas, and mining companies hide their payments to foreign governments. They have also worked to roll back education standards, provisions under the Affordable Care Act, and a rule long-hated by the gun lobby that prevents people with severe mental illnesses from purchasing firearms.
And that’s just last week. This week, Republicans in Washington used the CRA to roll back safeguards on Title X, a rule designed to shield federally funded family planning clinics across the country from partisan state-level defunding efforts. Rolling back Title X is the most serious threat to women so far this Congress because programs supported by this rule help provide life-saving and preventative health care services to uninsured and low-income men and women nationwide.
The president and Congressional Republicans said that they were going to help all Americans. Instead, they are now using the CRA to gut safeguards to the benefit of big oil, energy, and corporate polluters. It has been less than one month since the new administration took office and already the special interests of a select few are being prioritized over the needs of millions of Americans.
As Ranking Member on the House Committee on Rules, I have a front-row seat to this unparalleled assault and I will use my position to make sure that Congressional Republicans don’t get away with this quietly. Congress has the responsibility to protect and defend all Americans, and you can count on me to be vocal in my opposition to these dangerous efforts!
